Hopper – The new App in the Travel Space

The travel industry has made huge leaps and bounds in the last few years and the results are all around us. There are literally hundreds of App in the Travel Space available to us through the Android and Apple store for the travel lovers. With the travel industry slowly moving towards seamless integration within its horizon, the trend of mobile-assisted traveloyages (hey, I have just invented a new word here !!) are defining the way people are looking at future holidaying.

Apps define our day.

Travelers now have the option of visiting a destination or a location before physically visiting it . When we were planning to travel to US in 2013, we had checked up the cities, locales, and favorite touristy destinations much ahead, through websites, discussion forums and blogs. Our planning was not only limited to Virtual Tourist or Lonely Planet  or booking hotels through Booking.com but also the immense portability that Google Maps brings to you with its street maps and 3D imagery.

Mobile Applications is the mantra for all businesses worth its penny, today . The world of travel has moved ahead in the last 5 years with all travel-associated business houses  offering mobile Apps.  Whereas “Booking.com“, and “Hotels.com” were there for quite a few years, newer entrants such as AirBnb.com have also spiced up their customer satisfaction indexes with their own Apps. All major airlines have and are now promoting their mobile Apps and so are Car Rental companies. Restaurants , pick-up-services, food delivery business houses rely now on their mobile Apps to bring in business. Travel boards and websites such as  Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor have developed Apps for Android or Apple Stores.

The net has brought us closer to real life information, seating at our own comfortable homes, browsing our favorite destinations, whether it is a backpacking trip or a family holidays. Users now love to research before they actually take a vacation. And with the world economy not in the best of health for the last few years, the budget-conscious traveler is on the rise.  The discussion forums in many of these travel related sites are active with tens of thousands of inquisitive travel lovers asking, researching and debating possible travel options  and alternatives within the community. Apps and smart phones have made it easier.

We can now not only book hotels and boarding accommodations, air tickets or rental cars, we can also stay connected at each and every moment of our vacations through our social networking Apps such as facebook and twitter to share our photos and experiences, every step of the way. Mobile apps to search for local information are available now to every globally connected user. ‘Everything at your fingertips’, as the adage goes.

Save on your flight prices with Hopper

What does Hopper do ?

With a team of ex-employees  of Expedia and TripAdvisor working at it for the last 6 years, the alpha launch happened last summer with invited users. With this year’s launch, anyone can join in and create free accounts,  check out future flight prices, book them, and also browse for travel tips and advise.

Hopper tries to analyze and predict Airfares, lets you buy air tickets, and add alerts on air tickets.nce you log in, after a couple of welcome screens , once you start searching for a location and air ticket pricing, the mobile App gets pretty interesting. It provides  a current low price, predicts the future prices with date ranges, along with flight details for a horde of airlines. It also gives you the differential pricing based on date slabs. It shows you  price expectations based on weekdays marking them with different coloured bands to differentiate between the greens  and the reds. One can sort the results based on prices, departure and arrival time, stops and flight durations.

Hopper – The new App in the Travel Space has now  been downloaded 1.5 million times through Appstore. Price-tracking requests have now been set up on more than 2 million trips across the planet. With more than a hundred thousand downloads in the last 2 months through Android Playstore, it sure is catching up !!

Here is a Video on Hopper’s App that you can check out in YouTube.

Download Hopper if you plan to travel in the coming months. You can put a watch on the trip with subsequent reporting. You will surely not be disappointed.

The question, as the founders demand, is that “Will Hopper App kill Google for Travelers” ? The answer may not be an easy one. As much as what we can see, the answer is surely ‘No’. But with years of research and development of  mathematical algorithm and econometric probability theory, I have a feeling that we may have a lot of changes and new features to see in the coming months. What we see may only be the tip of the iceberg.
